Over-easy eggnogs

We once had a coworker who swore up and down that the bottled Evan Williams eggnog from the liquor store was the best nog on the planet. We were skeptical, but decided to give it a try. One sip in, and we nearly spit it out. From that day forward, we promised to never consume commercial, prepackaged eggnog ever again. Nothing against Evan Williams (they make a fine bourbon!), but nothing can hold a candle to a nog made from scratch. If you're consuming all those calories, it better be darn tasty, right?!

Tis the season for the nog, so today we're offering it up two ways for your ho-ho-holiday enjoyment. There are a million versions out there, but these recipes are from two titans in the cocktail world -- and why mess with that? Better yet, these are easy-peasy to whip up at home! Impress your guests this holiday season -- casually drop it into conversation that you made this wonderful eggnog just for them from scratch, and they will ooh and ahh with appreciation and awe, we promise.

First up, a boozy, classic eggnog from Sother Teague, of our favorite bar in the world, Amor y Amargo.

Classic Eggnog

Makes 1 cocktail

1 oz. bourbon

1/2 oz. Jamaican rum

1/2 oz. Laird's apple brandy

3/4 oz. whole milk

1/2 oz. demerara syrup

1/4 oz. heavy cream

1 egg

Garnish: freshly grated nutmeg

Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with ice until well-chilled. Strain into a chilled glass and grate some fresh nutmeg over the top. Sip & enjoy!

Next up, a fun and funky elevated egg nog from Jeff Morganthaler, who developed this for Clyde Common.

Tequila Sherry Eggnog

Makes 1 cocktail

1 1/4 oz. Amontillado sherry

1 oz. añejo tequila

3 oz. whole milk

2 oz. heavy cream

1 1/2 oz. (by volume) superfine or baker's sugar

1 large egg

Beat egg in a stand mixer on low speed until smooth. Slowly add in sugar until dissolved. Next, slowly add in sherry, tequila, milk, and cream until fully incorporated. For maximum flavor, refrigerate overnight! Grate some fresh nutmeg over the top when ready to serve. Sip & enjoy!
